About
Since 2019, I've been leading writing workshops for students of all ages and serving as a private writing instructor, specializing in creative writing, college and prep-school essay coaching, and journalism/non-fiction essay pitching and crafting as well as art therapy.
As a journalist with an MPS in art therapy, I have a unique, diverse set of tools to help other writers harness their creativity, and put their thoughts, emotions, and rich personal experiences into words. Drawing on over two decades of both clinical and creative experience, I'm adept at guiding even the most reluctant or blocked writers to approach blank pages with excitement, and to ask themselves the questions necessary to find the self-awareness central to all great writing.
With students of all levels, I aim to keep the work itself fun, no matter how challenging the topic, and encourage them to let their humor and wit shine through, crafting writing that's both engaging and memorable. Another focus of mine is imparting strong self-editing skills that students can continue to build on going forward.
What's my story?
I grew up in Rabat, Morocco, and Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and graduated cum laude from Groton, a boarding school in MA. I earned a BA in English Literature and Creative Writing from Skidmore College, studying at the Sorbonne in Paris for a semester and the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid for another semester, and am trilingual in English, French, and Spanish, as well as fluent in German and conversant in Arabic.
In 2003, I received my MPS in psychology and art therapy from SVA in New York City, and interned as an therapist for severely disabled foster children at New Alternatives for Children, and bedside at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I won an award for excellence for my clinical work in this field, and a grant for my related academic research, and frequently cover mental health, health and human development for major news outlets.
I first trained as a writing instructor at award-winning Writopia Lab in Brooklyn, NY, where I also led workshops before moving to Spain for several years. I'm currently a Creative Writing Teaching Artist at the Hammer Museum of Los Angeles, where I recently relocated to with my family and somewhat homesick Andalusian dog, Lucky. I teach art therapy and writing both locally and remotely, to students across the globe. When I'm not working, you can usually find me under water, near the water, dancing, hiking, or wielding a spatula.
